Hari Raya Puasa (Aidilfitri) in Singapore
Hari Raya Puasa (Aidilfitri) in Singapore 2027 falls on Wednesday, 10 March 2027, a gazetted public holiday.
What it marks
Aidilfitri marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting. It is the larger of the two Hari Raya celebrations, and its date is confirmed by moon-sighting through MUIS.
What's open and closed
A gazetted public holiday — offices and banks are closed. Geylang Serai and the bazaars are busy in the lead-up.
How Hari Raya Puasa is celebrated in Singapore
The celebration begins on the eve, when the takbir — the recitation glorifying God — is heard at mosques and homes after the end of Ramadan is confirmed. On the morning of Aidilfitri, Muslim families put on new traditional dress (the baju kurung for women, the baju melayu for men) and attend congregational prayers at the mosque. The day centres on visiting family and friends, where the young perform the salam (also called salim) — bowing to kiss the hands of elders to seek their forgiveness and blessing. Households hold open houses laden with festive dishes such as ketupat, rendang, lemang and an array of kuih, and elders give duit raya — small green packets of money — to children. Visiting and open houses continue well beyond the public holiday, through the month of Syawal.
“Selamat Hari Raya, Maaf Zahir dan Batin”
- How do you greet someone on Hari Raya?
- Say “Selamat Hari Raya” (Happy Hari Raya), often followed by “Maaf Zahir dan Batin” — a request for forgiveness for any wrongs, seen and unseen.
- How long is Hari Raya celebrated?
- The public holiday is one day, but visiting and open houses continue through Syawal, the month that follows Ramadan in the Islamic calendar.
