Zakat Harta in Singapore: The Zakat Most People Forget

When people say "zakat," they often mean the small fixed payment before Hari Raya, but that is only Zakat Fitrah. The larger and more commonly overlooked obligation is Zakat Harta, the zakat on wealth. Here is how it works in Singapore, in plain terms.

Zakat Harta vs Zakat Fitrah

  • Zakat Fitrah — a small fixed amount (a few dollars) per person, paid once before the Aidilfitri prayer.
  • Zakat Harta — 2.5% of qualifying wealth (savings, gold, shares, business assets and more), owed once it has met a threshold and been held for a lunar year. This is the one people forget.

They are separate obligations. Paying Zakat Fitrah does not discharge Zakat Harta, and vice versa.

The two conditions: nisab and haul

Zakat Harta becomes due only when both conditions are met:

  • Nisab — your wealth reaches a minimum threshold. For zakat on savings, MUIS sets the nisab at the current market value of 86 grams of gold. Because the gold price moves, the exact dollar figure changes, so check the current nisab on zakat.sg.
  • Haul — you have held at least that amount for one full Hijri year (about 355 days). The haul does not have to run pay-day to pay-day or Ramadan to Ramadan; it is simply any stretch in which your balance stays at or above the nisab. If your balance drops below the nisab during that period, the haul "breaks" and the clock restarts from when it next reaches the nisab again.

How it's calculated

The rate is 2.5%, and here is the detail people get wrong: in Singapore it is calculated on the lowest amount you held during the haul period, not your balance on the day you pay. So if the lowest your savings reached during the year was S$12,000, the zakat due is 2.5% × 12,000 = S$300.

Zakat on savings is the most common type, but Zakat Harta also covers gold, shares, insurance, CPF (there is a specific MUIS fatwa on CPF, generally on withdrawal) and business assets, each with its own rules. The zakat.sg calculator works these out and reflects the current nisab.

Where to pay

As with Zakat Fitrah, pay only through MUIS's authorised channels: zakat.sg, authorised Amil, and mosque kiosks, so it is properly counted and distributed.

Common questions

How is the nisab set in Singapore? At the market value of 86 grams of gold, per MUIS. It changes with the gold price, so check zakat.sg for the current figure.

Is zakat on my current balance or my lowest balance? The lowest balance held during the haul period, not the balance on payment day.

What if my savings dipped below the nisab during the year? The haul breaks. The one-year clock restarts once your balance is back at or above the nisab.

Does Zakat Harta cover CPF? CPF has its own treatment under a specific MUIS fatwa, generally applying on withdrawal. Use the zakat.sg calculator or refer to MUIS for your situation.

This is a practical overview, not a religious ruling. For your specific assets and situation, use the MUIS calculator or refer to MUIS.
