Zakat Fitrah in Singapore: How Much, When, and Where to Pay

Zakat Fitrah is a small, obligatory contribution that every Muslim who is able pays before Hari Raya Aidilfitri, including on behalf of their dependants. The two things people actually need to know are how much it is this year and by when, and both are more specific than "some money during Ramadan."

It's not a fixed amount — it changes every year

Zakat Fitrah is recalculated each Ramadan by MUIS. In Singapore it is pegged to the staple food, rice: the obligation is one sa' (about 2.3kg) of the staple food, and MUIS works the cash value from the median price of rice in two grades. So there are two rates each year, a normal rate and a higher rate (for those who eat, and can pay based on, a higher grade of rice).

For Ramadan 2026 (1447H), MUIS set the rates at S$5.00 (normal) and S$8.00 (higher) per person. Because the amount tracks the price of rice, it drifts over time, so check the current year on zakat.sg rather than reusing an old figure. Either rate discharges the obligation; the higher rate is a voluntary choice for those able.

The deadline is the Aidilfitri prayer — not the end of Ramadan

This is the part that trips people up. Zakat Fitrah can be paid from the first day of Ramadan, and you are strongly encouraged to pay early, but the obligation must be fulfilled before the Hari Raya Aidilfitri prayer on the morning of Hari Raya. Leaving it to the last day risks missing that window. The Aidilfitri date each year is on the 2027 page.

Who it covers

Zakat Fitrah is paid for every person, and the head of a household typically pays on behalf of their dependants, one payment per person. Who exactly is obliged and on whose behalf is a religious question; MUIS or your mosque is the source.

Where to pay in Singapore

Pay only through MUIS's official, authorised channels:

  • Online at zakat.sg — the simplest way, any time in Ramadan.
  • Amil / authorised collection centres — appointed collectors across the community.
  • Mosque self-service kiosks — at participating mosques.

Paying through an authorised channel is what ensures it is properly counted and distributed to the eligible recipients.

Common questions

How much is Zakat Fitrah in 2026? MUIS set it at S$5 (normal) or S$8 (higher) per person for Ramadan 2026. It is recalculated every year, so confirm on zakat.sg each Ramadan.

Do I pay for my children too? Typically yes, one payment per person including dependants. Refer to MUIS for who is obliged and on whose behalf.

What's the difference between the two rates? Both discharge the obligation. The higher rate reflects a higher grade of rice and is a voluntary choice for those able to pay it.

Is this the same as Zakat Harta? No. Zakat Fitrah is the small per-person payment before Hari Raya. Zakat Harta is 2.5% on wealth and is a separate obligation.

This is a practical overview of how Zakat Fitrah works in Singapore, not a religious ruling. For who is obliged, payment on behalf of others, and any specific situation, refer to MUIS or your local mosque. Zakat Fitrah is separate from Zakat Harta and from Fidyah, which have their own rules.
